Exception
“I have heard it said that the exception defines the rule in that it gives affirmative evidence of the very existence of the rule. My rules and codes have served me well in life, but at times I have been guilty of overlooking the possibility of discovering a pearl in my attempt to shuck the proverbial oysters in the most efficient way. Personal rules of conduct that inspire things such as schedules, procedures, and programs can be very helpful in organizing life while scripting and monitoring progress. They can provide the power to thwart temptation and be the backbone of discipline. However, one’s fundamental credo must be monitored and challenged on a regular basis to ensure that rigidity does not creep into thoughts and practices. Unknowingly trapped in rigidity can cause one to miss the defining moment of a rule; the exception”.
